Community Involvement

Leeton Veterinary Hospital

The Leeton Veterinary Hospital team strongly believe in community involvement. We are always happy to support community events and groups and some of these are listed below.

Leeton Show

At the annual Leeton Show each year, the Leeton Veterinary Hospital sponsors the Animal Nursery. Our team donates their time over the two days to run the nursery with assistance from members of the public. The animals on show at the nursery are generously loaned to us from our clients and we have a wide variety from kittens to ferrets and goats to ponies. This gives the community of Leeton and the surrounding area a chance to interact with animals they would not normally get a chance to see. It is a particularly special area for children as they can interact with and touch these animals. The Animal Nursery is so popular; the children often drag Mum & Dad back repeatedly for another look. We have also proudly won the award for the “Best Outdoor Display” on numerous occasions.

Father Robert Murphy of St Peters Anglican Church in Leeton performs a blessing of the pets ceremony for all diverse pet denominations!

WIRES

As part of our continuing commitment towards native wildlife, Leeton Veterinary Hospital accepts all native wildlife for medical assessment and rehabilitation if possible. All wildlife care is undertaken pro bono, and we rely on the general public to deliver injured or found wildlife to us. When such an animal is brought in, wildlife are examined by one of our veterinarians and treatment is administered, if necessary.

If the animal is can be rehabilitated and released in the future, it will be placed under the care of a licensed wildlife carer. If the animal is found to have injuries or conditions which affect its survival in the wild long term, it will be humanely euthanased.

It is illegal for a member of the public to keep or take care of native wildlife without a proper licence.

If the wildlife is found to be a verminous species, it is our legal obligation to humanely euthanase it. This includes foxes and rabbits.

Work Experience

Leeton Veterinary Hospital is pleased to support work experience programs for high school students and those studying Veterinary Nursing at TAFE or Veterinary Science at University.

Students from Charles Sturt University, Melbourne University & the University of Sydney, come to the Leeton Veterinary Hospital to do their internship during their degree in Veterinary Science. These students all gain valuable experience in medical, surgical & diagnostic procedures in a workplace environment under the supervision of one or more of our qualified Veterinarians.

Students from local High Schools that are interested in working in the Animal Industry or Veterinary Medical field come throughout the year to do one weeks work experience with us. This helps them decide if being a Vet or a Nurse is a suitable vocation for them to pursue.
